The spotlight is on Jazmin Rogel, Universidad Tecnológica Emiliano Zapata del Estado de Morelos, Mexico.

Universidad Tecnológica Emiliano Zapata del Estado de Morelos (UTEZ) is part of Mexico’s technology and polytechnic university network, whose objective is to generate competent professionals with high technological levels that respond to the needs of the social and productive sectors of the country. UTEZ is located in Morelos State, south of Mexico City.

UTEZ aims to teach students through 70% practical assignments and 30% theory. Each student is assigned a full-time internship for the final months of a four-year course. The Information Technology and Digital Innovation program prepares future engineers in database management, programming, computer security, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and related subjects.

Jazmin Rogel teaches database management and programming in the Academic Division of Information Technologies and Design. She has an Engineering degree in Information Technology. In addition, Jazmin coordinates the curriculum and teaching processes of the university Software Development Center.

She is trained in both the Oracle Database and MySQL platforms and teaches database using the Oracle Academy curriculum.

Oracle Academy: Can you tell us about your use of Oracle Academy resources?

Jazmin Rogel: I use Oracle Academy resources in my courses Databases and Databases for Applications. Specifically, I draw upon Database Foundations and Database Programming with PL/SQL. These provide a general introduction to Oracle Databases followed by practical exercises in which students get hands-on with database creation.

Databases are not difficult, they are easy — Oracle Academy makes them even easier through well-structured resources. They provide coursework, slides, quizzes, answers, and exercises. One of my favorites is the basketball team example. I don’t have to break my head inventing examples because they are already there. And the feedback is positive. For those with Oracle Cloud accounts, they can continue to learn, go online whenever they like.

In addition, I use the Oracle Academy Cloud Program. I assign Oracle Cloud accounts so that students can access the database for free to complete exercises from their homes. For those without cloud access, I use Oracle APEX. The materials comply with the sequence of learning activities outlined by the university. In particular, I use the slides and exercises. The materials are easy to understand, which greatly facilitates understanding and accelerates the learning process.

Oracle Academy: How did UTEZ become involved with Oracle Academy?

Jazmin Rogel: The university joined Oracle Academy eight years back and I started teaching four years later. I took courses online from an Oracle Academy instructor. There are also teachers at UTEZ using the resources in Java Programming and they plans to train others. I will be involved.

Oracle Academy: How many students are taking the database courses, and what benefits do they receive?

Jazmin Rogel: UTEZ has a policy of 30 students maximum per class. I have seven groups of 25 to 30 students, over 140 in total. I see two main benefits. The first, obviously, is that they acquire the ability to structure a database from scratch, learning to work with entities, relationships and so on. For those with Oracle Cloud accounts, they can continue to learn, go online whenever they like and retake tests at their convenience.

I have to add that the time and effort invested in learning database skills increases their value on the job market.

My philosophy is to encourage students to be better than their teacher, get ahead of me, exceed their expectations. When I see young people who knew nothing about databases and programming continuing to learn, research, and excel in the job market, I feel rewarded. And I am super happy with what Oracle Academy gives us.

Oracle Academy: Can you elaborate on that?

Jazmin Rogel: Certainly; it’s not only about completing the course, although naturally those are fundamental goals, and certification is something I promote. I refer to the broader learning outcomes of being exposed to innovative technologies. Yes, you come out as a database engineer, but you also have accumulated an important body of knowledge during the three years and four months. You have critical thinking skills, hands-on experience with real-life scenarios, and are equipped to help organizations in their business ventures.

When I see young people who knew nothing about databases and programming continuing to learn, research, and excel in the job market, I feel rewarded. Oracle Academy: Well, that sounds positive! Lastly, what are your interests outside of the university?

Jazmin Rogel: I am pretty busy with teaching my regular classes, extracurricular classes, and my work coordinating learning outcomes in the Software Development Center. But outside of those activities I spend lots of time with my family. I accompany my daughter to football (soccer) training and watch her matches when there is time.

Thank you, Jazmin Rogel, for your passion for Oracle Academy and for preparing your students to make a positive impact.
