The spotlight is on Oesman Hendra Kelana, Lecturer, Informatics Engineering, Ma Chung University, Indonesia

Ma Chung University is a private Indonesian university inaugurated in 2007, located in the city of Malang, East Java province. Ma Chung has three major areas of study: Economics and Business; Languages and Arts; and Science and Technology.

Oesman Hendra Kelana teaches databases as part of the Informatics Engineering Study Program. He began teaching at Ma Chung University in 2011, and has a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering and a master's degree in Computer Science from Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta Special Region.

Ma Chung University became an Oracle Academy member in 2015 and the Informatics Engineering Study Program uses the full database and Java curriculum within its course materials.

Oracle Academy: Why did Ma Chung University pick Oracle Academy to help in Informatics Engineering?

Oesman Hendra Kelana: We were looking for good teaching materials for database and Java without having to reinvent the wheel. I knew Oracle technologies and made the recommendation. Myself and one colleague then received online training from Oracle Academy, myself in database and my colleague in Java.

We are very pleased with the Oracle Academy resources. They are well conceived, systematic, of the highest academic quality, and they lead to the competency qualifications needed by our students.

Oracle Academy: Which resources do you use?

We are very pleased with the Oracle Academy resources. They are well conceived, systematic, of the highest academic quality, and they lead to the competency qualifications needed by our students.

Oesman Hendra Kelana: The Informatics Engineering Study Program focuses on two main areas, namely Intelligent Systems and Computer Systems, the backbone of IT system development in Indonesia ― and the world. I teach courses in Database Systems and Advanced Database. For the first, I use what Oracle Academy provides in Database Design and Database Programming with SQL curriculum.

In the Advanced Database course, I use Database Programming with PL/SQL.

To support my teaching, I use everything available: the slides, templates, quizzes and the case studies to use as projects. I teach in local language, Bahasa Indonesia, but show everything in English.

Oracle Academy: And how do you deliver the courses?

Oesman Hendra Kelana: I use Oracle APEX for my Database Systems course. APEX is such pleasure ― I don't need to create and install a database server on Oracle Cloud, and students don't need to install it on their computers.

Oracle Academy allows me to assign an APEX account to each student, between 25 and 30 per semester. With APEX, they experiment with SQL examples, follow exercises and take the quizzes.

Oracle Academy: What case studies have you used?

I use Oracle APEX for my Database Systems course. APEX is such pleasure ― I don't need to create and install a database server on Oracle Cloud, and students don't need to install it on their computers.

Oesman Hendra Kelana: We use several throughout the four years of the course. Right now, my class is split into groups of three or four who work on projects within the Oracle Academy Member Hub such as a Library System, Bookstore, and Car Rental.

They learn how to use PL/SQL to create the descriptions, business rules, the table structure and procedures required to execute the system.

For the final exam, I assign them Oracle Academy's Traveler Assistance PL/SQL Project. They work with database tables and procedures to help travelers with basic information about the geographic situation, languages, currency, and demographics of any country.

Oracle Academy: How do you grade the students?

Oesman Hendra Kelana: We use the quizzes available within the Oracle Academy Member Hub. Students must take the quizzes in every section of the course. For the final exam score, we have a formula for calculating the mid-term grades, interim quizzes and the results of their final database project, presented through Oracle APEX.

Oracle Academy: Are you planning on using the Oracle Cloud program in the future?

Oesman Hendra Kelana: Yes, I'm hoping to introduce the Oracle Academy Cloud Program next semester so that we can work directly with the Autonomous Database, instead of Oracle APEX.

Personally, I am using an Oracle Cloud account to access the Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning with Java course.

It is helping me in the computer science doctorate I am working on for completion in 2025. My topic is the forensic detection of malware in computer networks. The AI/ML materials are extremely useful in this context.

Oracle Academy: That sounds like an exciting project, which must take up a lot of your free time.

Oesman Hendra Kelana: That's right. Outside of teaching, I love traveling and reading, but my main focus is on researching the main trends in information technology: cybersecurity, data science, machine learning, deep learning, and cloud technology.

Thank you, Oesman Hendra Kelana for your passion for Oracle Academy and for preparing your students to make a positive impact.
