Making a difference with Oracle Academy
The spotlight is on Assistant Professor Sanmic Huang, Lee-Ming Institute of Technology, Taiwan
Lee-Ming Institute of Technology in Taipei, Taiwan, was founded in 1969 as a vocational college preparing students for jobs in engineering, tourism, fashion and the arts. The Information Management and Information Technology departments of the College of Engineering teach database management, programming, networking, and applications development. Its many computer laboratories are equipped with software for learning SQL and Java programming, enterprise resource planning, and e-commerce.
Dr. Sanmic Huang is an Assistant Professor of Information Technology and Information Management. He was also the leader of the Network and Systems Group at the Library and Information Center. Dr. Huang earned his PhD in the area of Digital Image Processing from Taiwan’s Tamkang University in 2016.
Through Huang, Lee-Ming embedded Oracle Academy’s curriculum into its teaching in 2010 and is planning to use the Oracle Academy Cloud Program to access Oracle Cloud Free Tier.
Oracle Academy: What are your main objectives in using Oracle Academy resources?
Sanmic Huang: Our department was set up to meet the demands of the Taiwan labor market by training people in the skills required for electronic commerce. Our teaching prioritizes the interrelated themes of SQL database management, website development and mobile devices.
Java being the backbone of website development, we want our students to go out and get jobs in this domain. We use Oracle Academy’s Java Programming course, and in the database area we teach both Database Design and Programming with SQL and Programming with PL/SQL. I’ve been teaching Java, SQL and other programming languages for over 20 years, using Oracle Academy’s resources at Lee-Ming for the past 10 years. They are invaluable.
Currently, we are planning to introduce students to today’s cutting-edge technologies using the Oracle Cloud Free Tier through the Oracle Academy Cloud Program.
Oracle Academy: What are the challenges?
Sanmic Huang: We need powerful servers — virtual machines — to teach Machine Learning, but institutes like ours cannot afford to buy the infrastructure. But with the Oracle Cloud Free Tier, we have all the computing power, databases, and apps development tools one could wish for.
Our intention is to use these resources for teaching Oracle Academy’s Artificial Intelligence with Machine Learning in Java course plus Internet of Things and Big Data. What’s great is that the Oracle Academy Cloud Program equips us as educators to provision individual cloud accounts for each student without having to install or maintain software or databases.
Oracle Academy: And what does Dr. Huang like to do in his spare time?
Sanmic Huang: I love to read and keep fit. My favorite sports are biking, swimming, and jogging. After the immersion in the technology driving today’s world, it is refreshing to let off steam in activities of this kind.
IoT applications are another passion of mine. I obtained my doctorate in digital image processing and created one of the early IoT apps — a system for fire prevention. In my free time, I absorb as much as I can in these fields in order to teach students Java and database tools to develop IoT and Big Data solutions.
Thank you, Dr. Sanmic Huang, for your passion for Oracle Academy and for preparing your students to make a positive impact.
