Intro to CS Program Expands in Latin America

Oracle Academy is pleased to announce that availability of its Introduction to Computer Science program has been expanded in Latin America and now includes the following countries: Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Oracle Learning Library is offering a free Oracle Massive Open Online Course, “Develop Java Embedded Applications Using a Raspberry Pi.”

Java Fundamentals Now Available in Portuguese

The 2013-2014 Java Fundamentals course is now available in Brazilian Portugese on Oracle iLearning. Curriculum codes are available to licensed Oracle Academy members via iLearning.

Academy Curriculum Aligns with CSTA Standards

To assist educators in incorporating Oracle Academy curriculum into their courses, Oracle Academy curriculum aligns with Oracle certifications and US and international educational standards. Standards alignment crosswalk documents and course alignment checklists are now available for Oracle Academy Java Fundamentals and Java Programming Courses and the CSTA K-12 Computer Science Standards.

Alice 3 Tutorials/Workshop Materials Available

Students and teachers -- do you want to continue practicing your Alice skills? The Getting Started with Java Using Alice course now has additional free tutorials that provide step-by-step guidance for building a complete Alice animation from start to finish.

If you are a teacher, workshop leader, or community volunteer, there are also free materials available to help prepare you to lead an Alice workshop in your community.

Oracle Receives Award for Work with Greenfoot

Every year, the University of Kent recognizes extraordinary innovation and enterprise demonstrated by its academics and partner businesses with the Innovation Awards. In March, Oracle and Greenfoot were honored with this year’s Impact through Knowledge Exchange award. Oracle Academy’s collaborative work with the Greenfoot team, led by Professor Michael Kölling from the School of Computing in Canterbury, UK, is enabled in part by a grant from Oracle Giving.

Greek IT Teachers Complete Academy ICS Courses

More than 110 Greek IT teachers representing the entire educational curriculum from primary to higher education completed Oracle Academy Java and Database Introduction to Computer Science Courses earlier this year. The participating teachers were enthusiastic about the new knowledge and skills they developed, sharing ideas about how to best use the software and course materials in their classes. Many expressed interest in attending more advanced Oracle Academy courses.

Academy Partners with Cinnamongirl for Event

In March, Oracle Academy was proud to partner with Cinnamongirl, Inc., to help deliver Cinnamongirl’s first ever technology focused event. With an eye toward helping girls become aware of the doors that studying computer science opens, Oracle Academy engaged Cinnamongirls in a fun and interactive computer programming workshop using Alice. With no prior experience, the girls learned to write their own computer game. They have been working on their games, and will present their work to each other and to Oracle Academy and Cinnamongirl, Inc., staff in June.

Oracle Academy at IPON 2014 in Utrecht

In March, Oracle Academy was pleased to be at keynote speaker at the largest education conference in Utrecht, the Netherlands. IPON 2014 welcomed more than 2000 attendees, including Dutch educational institutions, universities, education associations, and the Dutch Ministry of Education. We welcome the 6 new Oracle Academy members who joined when they visited our IPON 2014 booth!

Academy Talks Big Data Analytics at Georgia Tech

Oracle Academy was honored to make keynote and panel presentations on Big Data Analytics at the Georgia Tech Big Data Industry Forum in Atlanta, Georgia, in March. Academic and industry experts came together to share with students and each other the latest research efforts and industry projects in this exciting field.

Oracle Academy Open Days in Spain

On April 2-4, Oracle Academy and PUE (Provecto Universidad Empresa) joined forces to organize Oracle Academy Open Days in Barcelona and Madrid. PUE, a well-recognized organization with universities across Spain, and Oracle Academy were delighted to welcome more than 250 teachers and distinguished guest speakers from the Ministry of Education & Culture, CRUE (Conferencia de Rectores Universidades Españolas), and the Catalan President for Vocational Training.

Oracle Academy at ICTLT 2014 in Singapore

Oracle Academy was proud to be a Bronze Sponsor of the International Conference on Teaching and Learning with Technology (ICTLT) 2014, which was held at the Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Center from April 7-10, 2014. The Singapore Minister of Education, Mr. Heng Swee Kiat, was the guest of honor, and about 2000 delegates were present at the conference. Students from Oracle Academy’s partner, the Institute of Technical Education (ITE), presented their Java projects at the Oracle Academy booth to very positive responses from the delegates.

Oracle Academy & INLEA at Russian Academy Day

Oracle Academy and its partner, INLEA, introduced the Oracle Academy program to more than 185 university faculty members at the Russian Academy Day on April 16, 2014, in Moscow. Educators learned about Oracle Academy offerings, with a special focus on Introduction to Computer Science and Advanced Computer Science.

Oracle Academy at Devoxx France

Devoxx France, held in Paris in April, 2014, welcomed more than 1500 visitors, making it the largest developer conference of its kind in France. Oracle Academy was honored to deliver an opening keynote, addressing issues like youth unemployment, the EU Digital Skills gap, and the need for more women in ICT. Oracle Academy also provided Alice and Greenfoot workshops to more than 250 participants.

Students Learn Alice at Science Festival

Oracle Academy was excited to be a part of the USA Science & Engineering Festival, held in Washington, D.C., in April. Over the course of 3 days, hundreds of students experienced Alice with Oracle Academy and volunteers from ABLE, Oracle’s African American leadership organization. One student was overheard saying, “This is the best thing I’ve ever done in my life!”

Oracle Academy Sponsors Intl. Girls in ICT Day

International Girls in ICT Day was held on April 24, 2014. An initiative of the International Telecommunication Union, Girls in ICT day aims to empower and encourage girls and young women to pursue studies and careers in ICT. Oracle Academy celebrated this day by hosting more than 400 girls at 10 different fun and interactive Girls in ICT Day events in various countries, including Australia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Malaysia. An additional virtual session was attended by more than 350 girls from secondary schools across India.

“Take Our Children to Work” Day Events

To celebrate Take Our Children to Work day on April 24, the Oracle Academy offered workshops around the world.

In Austin, Texas, and Denver, Colorado, students learned how to create basic simulations in Java using Alice, which resulted in the development of fun and creative animations. Students at Oracle’s Worldwide Headquarters in Redwood Shores, California, were introduced to Java by learning to use Greenfoot to create basic games.

In Japan, Oracle Academy hosted 10 to 14 year old students for a Greenfoot Workshop for Kids in partnership with the Java team.

And in Mumbai, Oracle Academy hosted 14 students for a “Careers in Computer Science” event in conjunction with India’s Computer Science Day for Girls on May 5. Students heard Oracle women in technology speak about their experiences in an interactive session and were introduced to Java by learning Alice.

Oracle Academy Hosts IT Sessions in Pakistan

In March and April, Oracle Academy was excited to host technology information sessions at universities in Pakistan. At the National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences in Islamabad, Oracle Academy hosted more than 100 students and faculty members at a high performance data warehousing session. Students and faculty at the Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science & Technology in Islamabad joined Oracle Academy to learn more about Big Data analytics.

Academy Talks Women in IT in Athens, Greece

Oracle Academy highlighted the growing opportunities for women with IT skills across all industry sectors as part of a panel presentation at the Digital Europe eSkills for Jobs Grand Event in Athens, Greece on May 6, 2014. The event was organized by Digital Europe, and attendees were addressed by the Greek Minister of Education, who confirmed the ministry’s participation in a national coalition under the European Union Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs. Oracle Academy is a member of both the Greek national coalition and the EU Grand Coalition.

Academy and California Career Pathways Trust

In July, 2013, the California Career Pathways Trust was formed to make available one-time competitive grants to California school districts, county superintendents of schools, charter schools and community college districts to develop career pathways and industry partnerships that are aligned to high-need, high-growth, or emerging regional economic sectors. As an industry partner, Oracle Academy has committed to deliver Java Fundamentals and Database Design and Programming with SQL courses to teachers from a variety of school districts and systems across California.
